Biography

One of the specializations of the research team that I supervise is structured catalytic reactors used for removal of exhaust gases from various sources including volatile organic compounds (VOC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). The focus is also pointed on the catalytic exhaust gases from biogas turbines. The approach to the problem is interdisciplinary and popularizes the new emerging discipline of molecular catalyst engineering. The structured reactors are an outstanding invention which allow free scale up of the chemical processes. Their application in various processes is entirely dependent on the development of new, highly-active catalysts with an increased conversion adjusted to high transport properties. The way to follow is the optimization of the structure and the composition of the nanocomposite materials by working through various correlations amongst: mass transport, catalyst structure and composition and catalyst activity. In situ and operando spectroscopic methods, which are currently being developed in our lab, seem to be the only way to understand the molecular level processes which take part on a single grain of catalyst and to establish fundamental structure-performance relationships.
