The selection of research equipment available in our laboratory

Our laboratories at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Jagiellonian University specialize in in situ spectroscopy and operando methods for testing the surface of materials, in particular heterogeneous catalysts in real time. The branch related to conservation chemistry and research of cultural heritage objects is also intensively developed. We have advanced methods for analyzing material degradation, including these based on natural polymers (paper, fabrics).
The laboratory accepts orders for analysis of catalysts and fibers from industry, cultural institutions, archives and scientific research units, using the apparatus provided. We carry out work commissioned for various companies interested in comprehensive tests, as well as those related to individual measurements.
We invite you to familiarize yourself with the equipment of our laboratories and to contact us!
Spectroscopy / Microscopy in operando and in-situ modes
in-situ UV-ViS spectrometer
The developed configuration of the system allows to perform tests in various modes of operation using one of measuring position:
- standard measurement in ambient conditions in the range 200-250 to 800-1000 nm with an integrating sphere;
- temperature measurement in the VIS range (400-800) using a lens system;
- temperature measurement in the UV-VIS-NIR range using a temperature probe.
Confocal Raman microscope
coupled with atomic force microscope
In the in situ and operando modes, the device is used to determine the surface structure of catalysts based on metal oxides (nitrides and carbides) and reaction intermediate products. It is possible to specify material structures using a wide range of laser lines, profiling and mapping of material surfaces.
Atomic force microscope – AFM
Using the atomic force microscope, it is possible to examine the surface structure of both conductive and non-conductive samples in several modes: non-contact and indirect. The conjugated AFM system and microRaman can be used to analyze the composition and structure (topography) of exactly the same place on the surface of homogeneous as well as heterogeneous samples (e.g. structural catalysts).
Confocal Raman microscope
In the in situ and operando modes, the device is used to determine the surface structure of catalysts based on metal oxides (nitrides and carbides) and reaction intermediate products. It is possible to specify material structures using a wide range of laser lines, profiling and mapping of material surfaces.
FT-Raman
In the in situ and operando modes, the instrument is used to analyze intermediate reaction products on the surface of catalysts. Under ambient conditions, the device is used to analyze solids.
FT-IR spectrometer with microscope
In the in situ and operando versions, the instrument is used to analyze intermediate reaction products on the surface of catalysts.
Characteristics of materials
SEC-UV-VIS / MALLS / RI
The chromatographic set allows to determine in a wide range (100 – 10,000,000 g / mol) cellulose molecular weight distributions and THF soluble synthetic polymers. In addition, measurements of protein molecular weight distributions in the range of 15,000 – 150,000 g / mol are performed.
UV-Vis spectrometer
UV-Vis measurement of reflection, transmittance and absorbance spectra. An spectrometer with an integrating sphere allows the registration of solid spectra for flat light scattering samples. The apparatus can be used in research, among others degradation of paper, silk and dyes on various substrates as well as catalyst surfaces.
Hyperspectral camera
Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) allows to obtain valuable analytical data in a non-contact way for the entire object, regardless of its dimensions (from micro to macro scale).
Characteristics of catalytic properties
Catalyst characterization set
Catalyst characterization set, material characterization:
- high-volume testing of catalytic activity of tested materials (high throughput analysis)
- characteristics of sorption capacity and porosity of catalysts
Flow reactor
A reactor for conducting chemical reactions in the flow of gases enables tests in a wide temperature range (25-1000 C). Has a temperature controller. Used with external detectors.
Spectrometers
Cirrus ™ 2 gas phase mass spectrometer
Cirrus ™ 2 is a tool for monitoring and analyzing gas and gas mixtures as well as trace process gas impurities online; solvent vapors; hydrocarbons; atmospheric components and inorganic gases (including corrosive gases); freons and inert gases.
FAIMS spectrometer
FAIMS (Field Asymmetric Ion Mobility Spectrometer) spectrometer. Ion mobility spectrometer in a strong electric field. Freon and noble gases.
DESI-MS
The Desorption Electrospray Ionization type sample direct injection system for the Bruker Esquire 6000 mass spectrometer allows ionization and introduction of the sample to the mass spectrometer directly from the surface of the solid being tested.
Material modification
- Electric spinner with atmosphere control module
- Chamber and low-temperature plasma generator under reduced pressure
Electric spinner with atmosphere control module
Electro spinning enables the production of nanofibers from polymer solutions. Aqueous and organic solvents can be used. It is possible to spin homogeneous fibers and core-shells.
Chamber and low-temperature plasma generator under reduced pressure
In recent years, non-thermal plasma at reduced pressure or near atmospheric pressure has attracted interest due to its use in many emerging technologies. Non-thermal plasma can be used for sterilization, surface cleaning and surface modification.
